What is Writing?

Before I finished my first poem

I was already smitten

YouTubed every def poetry slam

For ours i listened

The rhythm

The lyrics

Made the microphone glisten

Fans celebrated content

I made my decision

I set out to craft rhymes

Set to stanzas with precision

Every poem dug deeper

Sharpened the mind for its social incisions

Bleeding heart pounded with the pen and

papers’ collision

But writing at first was too safe

A platform for avoiding suspicion

Cuz while writing reveals you

It’s keeping you hidden

See,

Writing doesn’t care about your audience

Or about what you’ve already written

Writing doesn’t care about your profession

Or what burdens you’re lifting

Writing doesn’t care about your finance

Or your social position

Writing doesn’t care about love

Or for which girl I am falling

Writing doesn’t care about where I am

Or why I’m not calling

Writing doesn’t care that I’m white

It doesn’t care that I’m balding

It doesn’t care that I’m fat

Or why my weight loss keeps stalling

Writing doesn’t care what I’ve seen

It doesn’t care what I’ve heard

Writing doesn’t care about anything

Because writing is a verb

Writing is sanctuary

Writing is bliss

Writing is sex

Writing is pleasure

Writing is waking up to a kiss

Writing is pain

Writing is relief

Writing is skepticism

Writing is belief

Writing is mundane

Writing is sublime

Writing is nothing

And everything at the same time
